Hon. James Okefe has vowed to resign his position as Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House Assembly if the people of Okpokwu State Constituency feel that his occupying the position is not in their best interest.

The Deputy Speaker disclosed this last Sunday while addressing a cross-section of his constituents during his first-ever official visit to Okpokwu since becoming the Number 2 lawmaker in the Benue State House of Assembly.
Hon. Okefe who said he was willing to resign his position as Deputy Speaker, put a question to his teeming constituents in a manner typical of the proceedings of the Assembly.

“If you truly feel that the seat of Deputy Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly being occupied by me is not in the best interest of Okpokwu and that I should resign, please say so now and I will leave for Makurdi first thing tomorrow morning to tender my resignation” said Hon. Okefe but a very loud shout of ‘nay’ reverberated through the crowd thus passing an unequivocal vote of confidence on the Deputy Speaker.
This clear vote of confidence and unambiguous endorsement of Hon. Okefe by the generality of his constituents put paid to the allegation from certain quarters that his acceptance of the seat of Deputy Speaker going to Okpokwu was a betrayal of his people.
It would be recalled that in Zone C where the position of Deputy Speakership is zoned to, Ogbadibo has enjoyed the position twice, Ado has occupied the position twice but Okpokwu, which, incidentally, is the oldest of these afore-mentioned local government areas had, before now, not had a shot at that position. According to Hon. Okefe, the time is ripe for Okpokwu which is one of the oldest and largest local government areas in Idoma land, to get their fair and well-deserved share at the table of governance in Benue State.
