The Benue Civil Society Coalition has listed intervention in the health, security, water, and economic sectors as priorities which the state Governor-elect, Chief Dr Samuel Ortom, must pursue in his first 100 days in office.
Spokesman for the group, Mr Rommy Mom, made the prescription at a meeting with Chief Dr Ortom in his Makurdi residence while suggesting that the starting point should be the management of expectations.
“Within the first 100 days the Ortom government should inform the Benue people the true and actual state of finances of the state in plain language and also explain the challenges that lie ahead,” he stated.
According to him there was an emergency in the health sector in the state and the administration must seek the reaccreditation of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, pursue reconciliation and secure lives and property as well as seek immediate ways of providing potable water.
He recommended the convening of meetings for purposes of developing a State Resilience Plan and holding a donor conference for big players in the sector such as the World Bank, the European Union, the United Nations Development Project, and the Department For International Development.
The Ortom administration should address the Benue Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, with a view to regaining its lost glory and getting citizens to pay taxes, he stressed.
Other areas that require attention within the period, the group stated, should include the provision of farm inputs and massive land clearing, setting up of community policing, resolution of trade disputes, initiation of a bill prohibiting public grazing in the state as well as payment of salary areas by at least 70 percent.
In his response Chief Dr Ortom expressed appreciation for the suggestions and assured that he would give the attention they deserved by working on their implementation as soon as he formed his government.
The group comprises Lawyers Alert, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Benue NGO Network, Christian Association of Nigeria, Nigeria Union of Teachers, and National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives.
