Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi Chapter, have embarked on a 3-day warning strike over non-payment payment of their wages.
Speaking to our reporter through a telephone conversation, the President of the association, Dr Augustine Enenche lamented the hardship they have been facing which have necessitated their action.
“The issue is simple, we are not being paid for the third month running and it has caused a lot of hardship for us. We have appealed to the government through the hospital management but nothing has been done. So we have embarked on a 3-day warning strike which began yesterday.”
Dr Enenche also explained that they had embarked on a similar strike in the past but the issue wasn’t resolved.
He however said the strike would end on Saturday (tomorrow), ” it ends on Saturday, so Doctors who are on duty on Sunday will resume work”
The association president ended by appealing to the state government to alleviate their suffering by paying their salaries and also called upon well meaning individuals in the state to prevail on the matter.
It will be recalled that Benue workers and pensioners have not being paid salaries for upwards of 3-4 months due to what the government have described as ” dwindling global oil prices” which they say have affected the revenue allocation to the state.
