.As LG elections are postponed to next year

Gov. Gabriel Suswam

Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Solomon Wombo has declared that Benue has witnessed a six hundred million naira shortfall in the state allocation which has caused the inability to pay salaries.
Wombo who made this disclosure during a media briefing with journalists in his office further informed that the state however was not resting on its oars to find alternative measures to the problem, as it is looking for ways to cover the deficit.
The shortfall which has stalled the joint account sitting for the month of september, according to him has already caused a great deal of difficulty in running the state.
“At the local government level in the state, we had a shortfall of about Six Hundred Million Naira. We want to bridge up these gaps so that we can be able to pay our people’s salary and run government. So we are working on that and we have not completed yet and so we have not really sat for the month.” He said.
He also informed that due to the lack of funds the state could no longer go into local government elections this year and as a result will have to constitute caretaker comittees.
“Our finances will not allow us go into elections as the chief executive said. He said for now he would likely resort to the caretaker arrangement. Now that the chief executive has announced that there will be no election”. Wombo noted.
