Kicks against Establishment of Grazing routes and reserves
The Nongo U Kristu U I Ser Sha Tar (Universal Reformed Christian Church), NKST has released a document stating the destruction caused the church in terms of property and deaths in the nomadic herdsmen’s attack on Benue and Taraba states.
ImageBriefing Journalist at the Conference Hall of NKST Women Fellowship’s Guest House, President of NKST Synod, Rev. Ayohol Ate in addition to condemning what he described as unprovoked attacks call on Nigeria’s Federal Government to evolve irrigation techniques that would promote irrigation in order to check the infiltration of irate herdsmen to Benue State.
He reasoned that grass market could boost the revenue of Benue state thereby enhancing the economic wellbeing of the people reiterating the Tiv adage that ‘sule u orgen ngu vihin u orgen ga’(one man’s farm should not destroy another’s farm).
Although the NKST Synod president said “the church (NKST) is for peace and we are heralds of the gospel of the Prince of Peace and we maintain our call in this crooked world that is characterized by inhumanity” and called on Christians to remain calm while looking unto God, he further said the church is grieved for reasons of issues of perpetration of Jihad in Benue state.
The Head of the church, which is predominantly Tiv wants the Federal Government to establish Benue state relief levy and opposed to an event of agreement soliciting for creation of grazing reserves on the ground that the Benue valley is already insufficient for indigenous farmers.
According to the document released by Synod, the church lost over Two Hundred and Sixty Five members due to the attacks between 2011 and 2014 both in Benue, Taraba and Benue state while about Ninety Eight congregations are razed with scores of members displaced.
The report laid no emphasis on finance but the damage reported surpasses the budget of the state in one fiscal year.
The Tiv nation is most affected by the insurgents’ activities in North Central Nigeria and NKST, the single largest church in the region is at the centre of the effects.
Synod also wants “the international community to investigate the role Niger Republic in perpetuating this mayhem” and to apportion
appropriate sanctions.
“We acknowledge the tremendous role of the Vigilante Groups in the course of peace building. We therefore suggest that they be encouraged to be more proficient in the discharge of their duties.”
