According to Atser, the cargo terminal would create opportunities for more marketers and investors in agricultural produce.
He said the state lost a lot of money yearly because of post–harvest losses with respect to fresh farm produce.
Atser said that with the terminal, farmers would export their perishable items like tomato, oranges and mangoes that were usually wasted because of lack of storage facilities and market.
“But with the presence of a cargo terminal, farmers can move their products into the international market and earn hard currency.
“The cargo terminal will help to boost the economy of the state because more of our products will be exported and this will encourage us to produce more as the food basket of the nation,’’ Atser said.
Also speaking, Mr Aondona Kuhe, Chairman, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Benue State Chapter, said that farmers were waiting anxiously to benefit from the initiative.
Kuhe said the terminal would encourage farmers to produce more knowing that their products would attract better prize offers.
“We are happy that the terminal is going to be a reality and we appreciate the federal and state governments for this initiative,’’ Kuhe said
The foundation of the cargo terminal at the Makurdi airport was laid by Suswan on Tuesday during the visit of former Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah.
