Worried over the recalcitrant attack on Benue farmers by suspected Fulani marauders, Makurdi local government chairman Hon. Godwin Donko at the weekend said the attack was a deliberate attempt by politicians to destabilise the administration of governor Gabriel Suswam over his support for President Goodluck Jonathan.

Collaborating his views, the paramount in the local government, HRH the Ter Makurdi, Chief Sule Abenga said those fueling the crisis in the state are politicians who are seeking elections come 2015.

Abenga denied link with the Fulani herdsmen, but said “nobody can deny me from having relationships with the Fulanis because I also have castles, but they are for entertainment and are small”.

“When Governor Suswam brought me to head the committee constituted to end the crisis between Benue and Nassarawa states and bring lasting peace, we were doing well but some people did not want the crisis to end. Some of them ate politicians who have interest in 2015. Let me tell you, the rumors will not help us”.
“The real thing on ground is, people are bent on seen that there is no peace in Benue State, the dimension to which this Fulani attack on our people is going is worrisome and you journalists should rise up and assist us”, said Chief Abenga.

But Hon. Donko at a media briefing at NUJ house weekend stated that the only solution to Fulani imbroglio was for the federal government to create grazing reserves for the Fulani cattle rearers.

Donko indicted Benue indigenes for been responsible for the attacks, insisting it was “deliberate attempts to destabilize Suswam’s government over his support for President Jonathan”, and further exonerated the paramount ruler from been partly responsible for the attacks as rumored in some quarters.

He stated that the issue of Fulani attacks on his people is one of the major challenges confronting his administration since he came to power in 2012, adding that proactive measures have been taken to maintain peace and order in the area.

The council boss disclosed that within one year in office, his administration realized over N22.845 million and judiciously applied it, while the council’s allocation of the Sure-P funds amounting to over N98.2 million saw the execution of 30 projects across the council wards of the local government.

Donko identified the problem of ghost workers which saw the emergence of over 332 staff as another challenge facing the local government, stressing that he had decided to ensure that all those whose appointments were backdated to 2006 be reverted to take effective date from the time they were issued in October 2010.
