The wife of Benue state Governor Mrs. Dooshima Yemisi Suswam is among the nominees for the premier edition of Most Valuable Governors’ Wives Awards, MVGWA, on February 10 this year to be held at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja.
“The MVGWA is designed to lead a new phenomenon in the assessment and recognition of the governors’ wives who are providing complementary achievements to the governors’ achievements. The governors’ wives have become part of the democratic team that have been providing grassroot developments, hence, the institution of this award,” Tom E. Obulu, the team leader said in a press statement.
The theme of the award is: “Grassroots Transformation in Nigeria: The Role of Governors’ Wives’ NGOs as Champions.”
According to organisers, the 36 governors’ wives were assessed based on their NGO projects available in the public domain and their impact on the people were considered.
Thereafter, thirteen governors’ wives shortlisted came from votes cast by the people on the internet over a couple of months.
The MVGWA Team then shortlisted six for emerging recipients for the year 2012/2013. The criteria adopted were sustainability, empowerment, impact, change agent and corporate branding.
Other nominees are: Chief Mrs Mercy Orji, Wife of the Governor of Abia State; Mrs. Ekaete Godswill Akpabio, Wife of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
Also nominated are: Hajia Adama Dankwambo, Wife of the Governor of Gombe State; Hajia Fatima Shema, Wife of the Governor of Katsina State; and Mrs. OlufunsoAmosun, Wife of the Governor of Ogun State.
Abia State first lady emerged from South East Zone with her family changing project, Family Empowerment Programme, while Akwa Ibom State first lady was nominated for her impactful Family Life Enhancement Initiative from the South South and Benue State from the North Central dazzled the region with her SEV-AV Foundation.
The others are Gombe State first lady from the North East with her ever benefiting project, the ; Katsina State from the North West with her Service to Humanity Foundation; and Ogun State from the South West with the Uplifting Development Foundation, that has uplifted the region.
