Benue Carnival: The Carnival Procession

The annual Benue Cultural Carnival has its main attraction in the carnival procession which is the event event aimed at showcasing the rich and diverse cultural endowment of Benue State as performed and showcased by the Benue youths. The carnival procession shall take place on the last day Imageof the four-week carnival. It is usually a very colorful, exhilarating and electrifying procession involving more than 160 cultural performance troupes from the 23 local governments of Benue State. This procession is the only event that is known to bring the state capital to a standstill as the procession covers about 10 kilometers. It traverses the state capital, taking off from Benue State University second gate located on the fringes of Makurdi, and culminating at IBB Square in the center of the town where all the featured cultural performances and displays take place. The procession is an inter-local government competion Imagejudged on the basis of attire, costumes and dances entertaiment. The procession therefore features elaborate displays of diverse Benue culture such as the spectacular ‘kwagh-hir’ masquerades and Muppets/puppets of the Tiv ethnic group, the stilt dancers and masquerades of the Idoma tribe and the various other dances and masquerades from the other ethnicities from the whole 23 local government areas of Benue State.,
