Governors of Nasarawa and Benue States, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and
Dr. Gabriel Suswam have restated their commitment to stem the tide of
communal clashes between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the two
states.

The governors made the resolution after frank deliberation at a
joint peace meeting held yesterday at the   government House, Lafia
the Nasarawa State capital.  They also resolved to cease hostilities and
immediately commence mopping up of illegal arms and ammunitions and disarmament in both states.

In a communiqué signed by the two state governors, both states resolved to  set up committees comprising of both traditional rulers and Fulani leaders to take assessment of damage and profiling of Fulani migrating herdsmen and embark on advocacy and enlightenment that would bring about peace in the troubled areas in the two states.

The governors also resolved to collaborate with the federal government
to set up grazing areas for migrating Fulani herdsmen as a sure way to
bring about peace between the warring tribes in the two states.

Earlier in his remark during the meeting which was attended by
security chiefs, traditional rulers and members of the state
executive councils, Governor Al-Makura expressed commitment of the two
state governments for achieving lasting peace, noting that the
attacks were a clear case of incursion.

He commended stakeholders from the two states for their commitment in
ensuring that peace was restored.

On his part, Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State noted that the
people of Benue and Nasarawa States share common affinity and should
not allow anything that could lead to a breakdown of law and order
between the two states.
