Eight academic staff of the Federal Government College Otobi in Otukpo
Local Government Area of Benue State have petitioned the Benue State House
of Assembly over what they described as punitive deployment.

The petition dated 15th October, 2012 and addressed to the Speaker, Benue
State House of Assembly, Makurdi stated that there was an alleged sex
scandal in the College in June, 2012 involving the then Principal Mr.
Okengwu Dennis Igbokwe and a female student of SS1B aged 15 years.

According to the petitioners, the PTA Unit of FGC Otobi was the complainant
in the case as contained in The Nation of 3rd July, 2012 and other national
Dailies. “What amazes us is how we were singled and collectively connected
with the issue to warrant a punitive re-deployment to the most crises areas
of the country”.

The eight teachers who exonerated themselves from any wrong doing at the
College said they did not request for reposting, deployment and if “no
financial cost is attached onto our deployment, it does means someone else
must have forged reposting forms on our behalf or is being mischievous.
This amount to a case of forgery, we therefore, demand a thorough
investigation”. They said.

The petition further alleged that the new Principal Mrs. Ann Okonkwo who
should have been acting as a mother by reconciling all the aggrieved
parties such as PTA, Teachers, students have rather come to continue by
taking side with her predecessor, Mr. Dennis Igbokwe.

They expressed wonder that a College with just 43 permanent teachers on
roll would unilaterally post out 8 staff in core subjects areas meaning
that SS3 classes originally tailored into Sciences, Art, Commercial Classes
has now been merged into just two Classes to minimize the effect of the
posting.

The petitioners who alleged ethnic cleansing at the College further said
six out of them singled out for transfer are of Benue origin and has since
reported to their new schools at FGC Ikot-Obion Ntong, Kiyawa, Zuru, Ahoda,
Bajoga, Billiri, Daura and Ijanikin respectively.

They urged the state lawmakers to call the new Principal of the College
Mrs. Okonkwo to order, the former principal, Mr. Dennis Okengwu be
disciplined according to the Civil Service Extant Rules and they (affected)
staff asked to stay put while the Vice Principal Academic Mrs. Comfort
Ejikeme who is an accomplice in the sex scandal be removed as her stay is
inimical to the progress of the school and community at large.
