Speaker of the Benue state House of Assembly Barr David Iorhemba yesterday resigned amidst allegations that he has embezzled funds meant for members of the legislative house.

This is even as thugs suspected to be mobilised by the resigned speaker storm the house, beating and destroying anything on their way.

The Speaker’s resignation letter, dated 8th November 2012, titled “letter of resignation” which was read before members of the house by the Deputy Speaker, Dr Steven Omenje gave the reason of his removal as personal and in the best interest of his family.

However sources from the state assembly who spoke to our correspondent in confidence disclosed that members of the Benue legislative house had earlier threatened to impeach Barr iorhemba but gave him an option to resign honourably and avoid embarrassment.

According the source, out of the 30 legislative members in the state assembly 28 member had signed to impeach the speaker while only two members including Iorhemba himself refused to sign.

Iorhemba had been accused of misappropriating funds meant for members and for  using such funds as if they were his personal property just as they said he has no respect for his colleagues.

Our correspondent gathered that the Benue state deputy governor chief Steven Lawani on getting news of the impeachment threats against the speaker had rushed to the place but was told by members of the assembly that they were not under him therefore he should not intervene in issues they described as legislative matters.

We also gathered that the state governor Gabriel Suswam who was out of town for an official assignment had made several calls in effort to prevail on members to halt the process but they insisted that Iorhemba was no longer fit to continue leading them as speaker of the house.

Meanwhile, when members accepted the speaker’s resignation and moved a motion to appoint a new speaker, thugs stormed the

Premises of the assembly and forced their way into the chamber beating members who fled for their dear lives.

The hoodlums also blocked the entrance of the assembly broke glassed threatening to deal with any staff or anyone who dare stop them.
