The Benue state commissioner for justice, Hon. Alex Adum, has declared
that the Akume administration is responsible for the industrial
decay in the state.
The commissioner made this declaration in katsina ala, when
the Benue Economic Team went on an inspection tour to the abandoned
industrial projects in Zone A’ senatorial district of the state. The
team inspected the fruit juice Industry at Katsina-Ala LGA, Lobi
Cassava Mills in Buruku, Tomato Puree Industry Wannune, Tarka Local
governments to discover the immediate and remote causes of the
abandonment of work on the projects.
According to Adum, the previous administration had used the Benue
Fruit factory Katsina- Ala,as a conduit pipe to syphone government
funds where funds totaling about 62 million Naira was claimed to have
been given to a contractor even after he was discovered to have gone
out of market.
Speaking on the commitment of government to revive all abandoned industries, Deputy Chairman of the Team who doubles as the Director General of the Benue State Planning Commission, Mrs. Dorcas Ukpe reiterated government determination to invest heavily in industrialization and said that the feat would eradicate poverty and create wealth and employment opportunities to the teeming youths.
The Special Adviser to Governor Suswam on Economic planning, Mr.
Sebastine Agbinda, who is a member of the state economic team revealed
that the Katsina-Ala fruit juice industry was initiated by the late
Governor Moses Adasu administration, twenty years ago, and that the
then government paid N10 million for procurement of equipments while
the former George Akume administration pumped in the sum of N62
According to Agbinda, who was also Adviser on Economic planning to the
late former Governor, Rev. Fr. Adasu the contractor who he disclosed
was a son of Chief Onyealu, a prominent traditional chief in Ibo land,
had breached the contract by failing to supply the necessary
equipments that were required for the completion of the industry. He
said that until state government retraces the erred contractor would
proper revelation be made and enablement for completion of the project
is achieved.
It can be recalled that the state Economic Team led by its Deputy
Chairman, Mrs. Dorcas Ukpe had, a month ago, visited the Igumale
Cement Factory in Ado Local Government, Otukpo Burnt Bricks in Otukpo
and the Taraku Mills in Gwer Local Governments to realize the
impediments surrounding the actualization of the defunct industries.
The team also visited the Garagbouhl Cassava Flour plant, Yuteco Juice
Factory, Wanune Tomato puree factories amongst others.
