The magistrate Court in Makurdi yesterday sentenced the Former Rector of the College of Advance and Professional Studies (CAPS) Makurdi, Mrs. Magdalene Damkor Ikpa for three months imprisonment over slapping a senior lecturer in the institution.
Mrs. Ikpa had sometime in 2009, during a serious disagreement over lecture period, slapped Mr. Benjamin Awua, a senior lecturer of CAPS who was a subordinate staff under her.
The Trial Magistrate, Mr. Austine Ityoyima, yesterday said, the act of slapping the senior lecturer was a clear demonstration of criminal force by the former Rector against a junior staff and added that the act was maliciously done to arise the temper of the affected lecturer.
According to Ityoyima, the convict who is a top civil servant did not in any way show a sign of ramose or heartfelt while the trial was ongoing and noted that as a high ranking government servant, Mrs. Ikpa was not licensed to humiliate a subordinate staff.
The magistrate further said it was highly necessary for those in top government positions to exercise patience and restraint even in time of serious anger and stated that what the former Rector did to a staff who was working under her was highly condemnable
Ityoyima ruled that the judgment was to serve as deterrent to other senior government officials who he said may want to do the same and therefore charged the convict to three months imprisonment without any option of fine.
