The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rt. Hon. Dr. Gabriel Suswam, today, approved the dissolution of 18 out of the 23 Local Government Area Caretaker Committees in the State.Image

In a statement made available to atiterkula, the Caretaker Committee Chairmen for Makurdi, Tarka, Gboko, Agatu and Okpokwu Local Government Areas have not been affected by this directive and were in turn directed to remain in office.

The affected Caretaker Committees Chairmen have since been directed to handover immediately to their respective Directors General, Services and Administration in their Local Government headquarters pending the appointment of new committees.

No reason has been so far advanced for relieving the caretaker committee of their duties but it has been common cry that the committee members had over stayed their days in office.

In the statement signed by his Special Adviser Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Cletus Akwaya, the Governor thanked the Chairmen and members of the dissolved Caretaker Committees for their various contributions to the development of the State during their tenures.

This move many believe is a step to conducting the long awaited local government polls. It is worthy to recall here that the governor had last month passed into law the amendment of the local government bill nad also the bill to reconstitute the state electoral commission in ready for the local government polls.
