BENUE: RESIDENT DOCTORS INTENSIFY STRIKE ACTION

Dr. Terfa Yuham, the president Association of Resident Doctors(ARDs),
in Benue state, has insisted that the union will not renege on its
decision to sustain the strike embarked upon by members in agitation
for implementation of their proposed consolidated health salary
structure .

Dr. Yuham, who accused the Benue state Government of negligence
lamented that ,with only Twenty Five Medical Doctors serving in the
Twenty Three General Hospitals it is impossible to cater for the near
four million people in the state hence the need for them to press on
Government to employ more hands.

“With the poor salary package most of the Doctors have left to the
Federal Medical Centre Makurdi, Benue state University teaching
Hospital and the neighboring states of Nasarawa and Kogi who have
embraced the new National salary policy.” He said.

The ARD president noted that the strike which started on 10th January,
2011 has led to the increase in mortality rate, poor economic
situation as well as affect the political image of Benue in the comity
of states, emphasizing that even with the skeletal services for
HIV/AIDS patients the patients are psychologically down.

He further emphasized that in lieu of the full implementation of the
package to Doctors serving at the University Teaching Hospital,
Makurdi, the union has refused the 50% implementation offered by the
Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Orduen Abunku as they
have resolved to take nothing less than they demand.

Meanwhile, the other health workers who have also join the strike are
Medical and Health workers union (MHWU), National Association of
Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists’ (NAHAP), Nigerian National
Association of Nurses and Midwives (NNANM) as well as Association of
Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (ALSN).

A resident of new GRA Makurdi, Mr. Joseph Akotyo decried the strike
action by Medical Doctors in the state Government health institutions
saying he has settle a bill of over N145,000 at a private Hospital
where his wife was on admission since 5th October, 2011.

When contacted, Commissioner for health and human services, Dr. Orduen
Abunku, said Government was mindful of the health workers strike but
was quick to add that Government has offered to implement the new
salary package for health workers in part, a situation rejected by
resident Doctors.

According to the commissioner, the best thing for Medical workers is
to accept what is on hand and shelve off the strike so as to return
to the negotiation table with Government to move the health sector
forward.
