BENUE:LOCAL GOVERNMENT CHAIRMAN ACCUSED OF INSTIGATING VIOLENCE

The chairman of Kwande Local Government, Benue State, Chief, Terlumun Akputu, has been fingered as one of the masterminds of the violence in the local government he hold sway as transition chairman.
This comes at the heels of Sunday’s disruption of a church service at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Dagba, Adagi, Kyurav-Ya in Kwande Local Government where a visiting Priest in the Parish, Rev. Fr. Akaashima was seriously beaten up and his priestly regalia torn with other members of the parish including some police officers that were drafted to the church fleeing into nearby bushes for their dear lives.
atiterkula gathered that few days to the occasion, Mr. Akputu, had allegedly approached the Police Division in the area requesting them to stop the occasion but was turned down since the police insisted they lacked the powers to stop people from going to church ceremonies.
When contacted on phone, the chairman distanced himself from the allegations that he knew anything about the crises that rocked and stalled the thanksgiving since; he was not even in the state but in Calabar. It could not be established when he left for Calabar, as when the question was put to him, the Caretaker Chairman, simply ended the call.
But, a source to spoke on anonymity accused the Chairman and another political heavyweight in the area, Mr.Iorwuese Anhange, of being the brains behind the assault. According to him, Mr. Akputu had vowed that as far as he lives, the occasion will not hold, and so in effect, on the night preceeding the Thanksgiving Mass, known political thugs were seen parading Adikpo, the headquarters of the Kwande Local Government where they later retired at Mr.Anhange’s house .
The Senate Minority Leader, Dr. George Akume, Prof. Steve Ugbah, Hon. (Col) Benjamin Aboho, and other prominent as well as elected officers at various levels under the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) were billed to grace a said thanksgiving mass but refrained when they were informed of the security situation .
According to witness accounts, thugs numbering up to fifteen carrying sophisticated guns, stormed the church premises shot sporadically in the air and burnt down canopies that where strategically positioned for visitors. About 10 vehicles including that of the visiting priest were alleged to have been terribly smashed.
Though efforts to get the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Adikpo town to confirm the incident proved abortive as his number was not going through, the PPRO Makurdi Command, Mr. Elaribe Ejike assured that the situation had been controlled by the police force although arrests were yet to be made.
It is worthy to note that, Kwande Local Government, has been crisis prone since 2003, when there was a full blown crisis owing to political disagreement between political heavyweights, the ensuing crisis claimed hundreds of lives and millions of property were destroyed. Many fear that with the tense atmosphere, this episode may repeat.
