• It Is  Akume and Unongo’s Handiwork- Information Commissioner

Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor, Dr. Cletus Akwaya yesterday had a close shave with death as he was attacked by unknown gunmen.

Dr. Akwaya who is presently in a stable condition told  newsmen while on his hospital bed that he was  attacked at about 9 :00 pm on Saturday night  while at a meeting in Makurdi,  with political stalwarts from his council ward (mbadede).

The Special adviser who sustained wounds on the head from six shots by his assailants said, while he was at the meeting, four young men approached him, with the thought that the young men were approaching him to exchange pleasantries, Akwaya approached them when he suddenly noticed one of them pull out a gun from under his shirt whom he tried to disarm. It was at this point that his partner shot Akwaya six shots to the head and was brought down in the ensuing brawl.

A thoroughly bruised Akwaya, further narrated that he then took to his heels sensing that they could over- power him but unfortunately, did not make it far enough to evade them as he tripped and fell by a fire place, where the gunmen decided to pick up the firewood logs lying around to deal blows on their victim who managed to run into the nearby trees to evade his assailants.

According to him none of the properties he left behind during his flight was tampered with as his handsets and car keys as well as other valuables were still found where he had abandoned them in search for a safe haven.

According to him, he reported the matter to the Nigerian Police, at the ‘B’ Division, who he said is currently investigating the matter. Although the divisional Police Officer for the said Division could not be reached for comments, the state Police Public Relations Oficer, Mr. Ejike Elaribe, confirmed the story but told ati terkula that as at the time of filling this report, he had not received full brief on the matter and that the signal had just been sent to his office thus could not comment on the issue.

In condemnation of the incident, the state commissioner for Lands and Survey, Hon. John Tondo, who was at the hospital in solidarity for the attacked Special Adviser, decried the unfortunate incident stating categorically that it was a clear case of assassination and not robbery.

Also reacting to the murder attempt, state commissioner for information, Mr. Conrad Wergba, attributed the attack to the opposition in the state pointing particularly, Senate Minority Leader, Sen. George Akume and elder states man, Wantaregh Paul Unongo.

“ it is the handiwork of the opposition particularly Paul Unongo and Geroge Akume. Akume used to call Unongo the headmaster of violence and Unongo called Akume, the D.P.O of violence, today they are in the same camp. This is what you get. The attack on Akwaya was meant to kill him but thank God they failed, they have penciled down names and even some of us are targets.” He cried.
