The 13th May killing of Mr Charles Ayede, the Media Aide to the governorship candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria,ACN,Prof Steven Ugbah who contested election with Governor Gabriel Suswam on the 26th of April 2011 is a seeming battle line between 5the governor and the opposition party as Ugbah has accused Suswam for being responsible for the murder of the deceased.
This was made public at a press conference last week Saturday in Makurdi with Senator George Akume present at the Briefing.
Narrating the incident(which he narrowly escaped),the governorship candidate told Gov Suswam that he was only joking by using threats like killings, kidnapping and series of attacks to demean their courage from continuing with case in the court maintaining justice was going to prevail at the end of the day.
He vowed that even if the next target of killing will be himself, senator George Akume or his DG of campaign, Prof. David Iornen, nothing will stop him of continuing with the court process until God’s providence would manifest for Benue people.
The ACN candidate who also bared his mind on the killing of his Aide called on the Governor to calm down and abide to the court process if really the mandate he has is for him.
Hear him even though “the main subject of this press briefing is a very solemn and sad one, I want to tell you that ‘am still smiling because the people of Benue need hope. We need to restore their faith and confident in government which cannot happen if we are all sad, and base on the things we have experienced especially this past elections do not inspire hope or confidence in the future of our state.
Let me read to you formally the press statement. May 13th 2011, I lost one of my most committed member of our campaign team, Mr. Charles Ayede. You have seen pictures of Mr. Charles Ayede after his murder by what we believe are PDP assasants. If anybody is in any doubt that our party, ACN in Benue is under sage by the government of Dr. Dabriel Suswam, this pictures should leave you with no doubt, the intolerance for divergent vies of opposition in this state
This is what you get when you do not tolerate ultimate views but you want to change onto power at all cost. Mr. Charles Ayede until his tragic untimely unfortunate death was a senior media adviser on the Professor Steve Torkuma Ugaha and Young Alh. Campaign organization. This shocking tragic development was occasioned on attack on my convoy which was 15 minutes ahead of me. I was heading towards Makurd from Abuja, when we got to the forest plantation located a few kilometers from Kardaroko, gunmen suddenly emerged from the bush and started shooting at the vehicle in which Mr. Charles Ayede was driving and Mr. Adaa Maagbe and security person were riding. Mr. Adaa Maaghe is my senior Special Adviser Mr. Charles Ayede was killed instantly and you can see the bullet holes I his body. These were not usual types of bullets, these were not your street type guns that we use; these were sophisticated weapons that were used. You can also see the cars wounded with bullets. Fortunately Mr. Adaa Maagbe escaped and was hiden by local villagers, Mr. Maagbe called me and urged me to return to Lafia when I did.
Prof. ugba who took refuge in Governor-elect, Tanko Almakura’s house after the event, has promised that nothing will deter his resolve to reclaim his mandate through the on-going court process and the attack, he said has further strengthened this resolve. He condemned the consistent attacks by the ruling party who he said had started right from the build up to the polls .
Meanwhile, in a telephone interview with national accord the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Benue state chapter, through its chairman, HON. Abba Yaro, also condemned the attack on members of his party, attributing it to desperation by the state governor, Hon. Gabriel Suswam, to stay in power by all means.
It is not a compulsory issue; the governor should wait for the results of the tribunals. After all he has been presented his certificate of return . this is just politics and there should be no enemity, after this we can sit and talk like friends. He said.
The gubernatorial aspirant, Prof. Ugba, has also challenged Gov, Suswam to calm down and allow him follow the legal process as he has been declared the winner of the election.
